Description

Rose 31 is the rose that reads as warm skin rather than a bouquet. Composed by Daphné Bugey for Le Labo in 2006, it takes a Centifolia rose and runs it through an unapologetic overdose of cumin, then dries the whole thing out with vetiver, cedar and guaiac wood. What comes out is spicy, faintly animalic and far closer to a woody-musky signature than to a floral, which is why so many wearers describe it as smelling like warm skin rather than flowers, and why it has stayed one of Le Labo's most worn scents for two decades.

How It Differs From Le Labo Santal 33

  • Santal 33: dry smoky sandalwood and leather over a bright violet-cedar opening; the more instantly recognisable of the two.
  • Rose 31: warmer, spicier and more intimate; the cumin gives it a body-heat quality Santal 33 never reaches for.
  • Both are built on the same dry woody backbone. If you want those woods clean and cool, Santal 33; if you want them warm and human, Rose 31.

Scent Character

  • Woody: 50%
  • Floral (Rose): 29%
  • Oud (Agarwood): 14%
  • Sweet: 7%

Translation: woody first, rose second, which is exactly how it wears. There is no column here for the cumin that actually defines this fragrance, so read that rose as warm and spiced rather than fresh-cut. The agarwood sits quietly in the base beside olibanum and labdanum: real, but a background resinous warmth, not an oud fragrance.

Fragrance Pyramid

Top: Rose, Cumin

Heart: Rose, Vetiver, Cedar

Base: Musk, Guaiac Wood, Agarwood (Oud), Olibanum, Labdanum

Performance

  • Longevity: roughly 6–8 hours on most skin. Reported results genuinely vary, from just over 5 hours to 9 or more, so treat this as skin-dependent rather than guaranteed.
  • Sillage: moderate. Projection is at its strongest in the first half hour, then settles into a close, intimate bubble.
  • Projection: about arm's length early on, then within touching distance for the rest of the wear.

Best Occasions & Season

  • Season: best in cool weather, autumn through winter; the dry woods keep it wearable into spring.
  • Occasions: evenings, dinners and close-quarters wear, where its warmth is meant to be noticed by people standing near you.
  • Skip for: hot, humid days, when the cumin can read heavier than intended.
  • Gender: unisex, and genuinely so; the cumin-and-wood structure keeps it from leaning either way.

FAQ

Does Rose 31 actually smell like roses?
Only partly. The rose is there, but it is wrapped in cumin, vetiver and cedar, so most people read it as a warm spicy woody scent with a rose at its centre rather than as a floral. If you want a straightforward rose, this is not it.

What does the “31” mean?
Le Labo names each fragrance after its dominant material followed by the number of ingredients in the formula, so Rose 31 is a rose built from 31 ingredients, just as Santal 33 is sandalwood from 33.

Is it for men or women?
It is composed and marketed as unisex, and it genuinely wears that way. The cumin-and-wood structure reads more skin-like than gendered.

Does it contain real oud?
Yes, agarwood is listed in the base alongside olibanum and labdanum, but it is a supporting resinous warmth, not the centre of the fragrance. If you are expecting an oud-forward, Middle Eastern style scent, sample it first; here the oud stays in the background.
