Dries Van Noten Soie Malaquais EDP
Description
Roasted chestnut and dry cacao wrapped in rose, a gourmand with no sugar in sight.
Composed by Marie Salamagne for the Dries Van Noten fragrance collection and released in 2022, Soie Malaquais takes its name from the Quai Malaquais in Paris and its character from the Belgian designer's fabric obsession. Blackcurrant and bergamot open it almost fresh, then chestnut and cacao take over: warm and starchy rather than sweet, with a powdery rose running through the middle like a thread of silk. Reviewers describe the chestnut as steamed rather than candied (nutty, soft, faintly dusty) and the whole thing as unusually textural for a designer release.
Scent Character
This one sits outside the usual sweet-woody-fresh vocabulary, so here is the honest shape rather than a percentage breakdown:
- Nutty chestnut: the signature: warm, starchy, softly roasted, never praline-sweet.
- Dry cacao: unsweetened cocoa powder, dusty and velvety, giving the base its depth.
- Powdery rose: the “silk” in the middle: smooth and abstract more than floral.
- Fruity-fresh opening: blackcurrant and bergamot for the first stretch, quickly absorbed into the nuttiness.
Translation: a soft nutty-cocoa gourmand with a rose-powder heart, comforting and mature rather than sugary or foody.
Fragrance Pyramid

Base: Chestnut, Cacao
Performance
- Longevity: Good. Most wearers report 6 to 8 hours, and some considerably longer. A minority find it fades faster, so skin chemistry plays a real part here.
- Sillage: Moderate and close-wearing, noticeable to people near you without announcing itself across a room.
- Projection: Around arm's length for the first couple of hours, then an intimate skin scent. This is a quiet, textural fragrance by design, not a projector.
Best Occasions & Season
- Season: Best in Fall and Winter, when roasted chestnut and cocoa feel most at home; it also works on cool Spring days.
- Occasions: Everyday wear, work, and relaxed evenings. Its restraint makes it easy to wear around other people.
- Skip for: Hot, humid weather, where the nutty-cocoa base can turn heavy.
- Gender: Unisex, catalogued for women and men, and genuinely wearable by both.

FAQ
Is it sweet?
Less than you would expect. The chestnut reads roasted rather than candied and the cacao is unsweetened. It is a gourmand in texture more than in sugar.
What does the “silk” note smell like?
Silk is an abstract accord, not a raw material. In practice it is the smooth, powdery softness that sits between the rose and the chestnut and keeps the two from clashing.
Which version is this?
The standard Soie Malaquais Eau de Parfum from the house's refillable line, first released in 2022. Dries Van Noten has since issued a separate limited edition of the scent. That is a different release.
How long will a 5mL decant last?
Roughly 40 to 50 sprays, which is several weeks of regular wear, enough to see how it behaves across different weather before committing to a full bottle.
