Description

Diptyque Tam Dao Eau de Parfum is a hushed, temple-quiet sandalwood — creamy and dry rather than sweet, and the reference point most niche wood lovers measure others against.

Composed by Daniel Moliere for the Parisian house Diptyque and launched in 2013, the Eau de Parfum is a rounder, fuller reading of the 2003 Tam Dao Eau de Toilette, inspired by a founder's childhood memories of the sacred forests of Indochina. Precious Goa sandalwood sits at the centre, lifted by Italian cypress and myrtle and grounded in amber, white musk and Brazilian rosewood. Reviewers who own both consistently call the Eau de Parfum the better of the two — the same meditative wood, with body behind it.

Scent Character

Tam Dao is a sandalwood soliflore in spirit: dry, milky-creamy wood with a green-resinous cypress-and-myrtle top and a soft powdery-amber finish. Diptyque built it as sandalwood without gourmand sweetness — so despite the creaminess there is no vanilla, no sugar and no fruit in it. Because the composition sits almost entirely inside one accord family, a percentage breakdown would misrepresent it: read Tam Dao as serene, incense-adjacent wood, and nothing else competing for attention.

Fragrance Pyramid

Top: Rose, Myrtle, Italian Cypress

Heart: Sandalwood, Cedar

Base: Spices, Amber, White Musk, Brazilian Rosewood

Note: this is the 2013 Eau de Parfum pyramid. The 2003 Eau de Toilette is a separate, sharper cedar-forward composition — see the FAQ below.

Performance

  • Longevity: Good — most wearers report 6–8 hours on skin from the Eau de Parfum, and noticeably longer on scarves and knitwear. (The Eau de Toilette manages roughly 4–6.)
  • Sillage: Moderate and deliberately intimate. Diptyque compositions are built close to the skin — this is a fragrance people notice when they lean in, not from across a room.
  • Projection: A modest scent bubble for the first two to three hours, then a soft skin-and-fabric wood that stays with you.

Best Occasions & Season

  • Season: Best in Fall, Winter and cool Spring, though its dryness keeps it wearable year-round.
  • Occasion: Work and office, quiet everyday wear, evenings in — anywhere understatement is the point.
  • Gender: Unisex, and genuinely so.
  • Skip for: nights out where you want to be noticed from a distance, or if you are after a sweet, gourmand wood.

Concentration & Provenance

Concentration: Eau de Parfum
Perfumer: Daniel Moliere
House: Diptyque (Paris, France)
Year: 2013 (the Eau de Toilette dates to 2003)

FAQ

What is the difference between Tam Dao Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?
The Eau de Parfum (2013) is the rounder, creamier, longer-lasting version — roughly 6–8 hours versus 4–6 for the 2003 Eau de Toilette, which reads drier and more sharply cedar-forward. Most reviewers who have worn both prefer the Eau de Parfum.

Is Tam Dao sweet?
No. It reads creamy because of the sandalwood, but there is no vanilla or sugar in the formula — Diptyque deliberately composed it as a sandalwood without gourmand sweetness.

Is it a men's or women's fragrance?
Unisex. A dry sandalwood with no floral sweetness and no aquatic freshness sits comfortably on anyone.

Does it use real Mysore sandalwood?
Diptyque credits precious Goa sandalwood as the heart of the composition. As with every modern sandalwood fragrance, the accord is built from a blend of natural and captive materials rather than pure Mysore oil — which is no longer commercially available at scale.
