Description

Moth is Zoologist at its most theatrical, a spice-dusted powdery floral that smoulders down into honey, smoke and genuine agarwood, built as the portrait of a creature drawn to the flame. Released in 2018 and composed by Tomoo Inaba for the Toronto house Zoologist, it is an extrait de parfum at roughly 20% concentration, and it behaves like one. The opening is a full spice cabinet: clove, black pepper, saffron, cumin, nutmeg and cinnamon over a flicker of lemon. The heart turns unexpectedly soft and powdery, all heliotrope, mimosa and iris with rose and jasmine behind them. Then the base arrives: honey, smoke, resins, guaiac, cypriol, patchouli, vetiver and agarwood. Reviewers consistently note that the achievement is coherence, for a composition this crowded, the notes harmonise rather than fight for dominance.

Scent Character

  • Spicy: 26%
  • Floral: 26%
  • Woody: 20%
  • Oud: 13%
  • Sweet: 11%
  • Fresh: 5%

Translation: spice and powdery florals share the lead in equal measure, which is the whole trick of this fragrance. The cumin-and-clove heat and the heliotrope-iris hush are the same size. Underneath, a fifth of the profile is dry woods and a genuinely resinous oud fraction, with honey supplying the sweetness rather than sugar.

Fragrance Pyramid

  • Top: Clove, Black Pepper, Saffron, Cumin, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Lemon
  • Heart: Heliotrope, Mimosa, Iris, Rose, Jasmine, Lily-of-the-Valley
  • Base: Honey, Smoke, Agarwood (Oud), Resins, Musk, Guaiac Wood, Ambergris, Cypriol (Nagarmotha), Patchouli, Vetiver

Performance

Longevity: 6–8 hours as a full composition, with the oud and resin base detectable considerably longer. Reviewers report it clinging to skin and clothing well beyond the floral phase.
Sillage: Strong in the first hour, driven by the spice accord, then it draws inward.
Projection: Several feet early on, settling to arm's length.

An honest note: this is an extrait, but not the sort that simply shouts louder for longer. Reviewers describe the bright spice-and-floral top half fading after about six hours while the smoky-oud remainder lingers for a long time afterwards. Two sprays is plenty, and the cumin in the opening is a real dividing line. Some read it as skin warmth, others as sweat. That is exactly what a decant is for.

Best Occasions & Season

Cold-weather material: Fall and Winter suit it best, and the honey-smoke base can turn heavy in summer heat. Best kept for evenings, dinners and occasions where a fragrance is allowed to be the conversation. Unisex, and genuinely so. The spice-and-powder balance sits outside the usual masculine/feminine split. Skip it for the office or anywhere with recycled air.

Try Before You Commit

A spiced, cumin-lit oud floral is not a blind-buy fragrance, and at extrait pricing it is worth being certain. Hand-poured decants start at $9.99 for 1mL, with 5mL at $44.99 and 10mL at $74.99 for the longer acquaintance this one arguably needs.

FAQ

Does Moth actually contain oud?
Yes. Real agarwood sits in the base, alongside smoke, resins, guaiac and cypriol. This is one of the cases where the darkness genuinely is oud rather than amber standing in for it.

Is it men's or women's?
Unisex. The spice and oud pull traditionally masculine, the heliotrope-mimosa-iris heart pulls the other way, and the two hold each other in balance.

How long does it last?
About 6–8 hours as composed, with the smoky-oud base hanging on much longer than that on skin and fabric.

Is it a gourmand, given the honey?
No. The honey here is animalic and waxy rather than edible. It reads as beeswax and warmth next to the smoke, not as dessert.
