In The Belly of The Beast is a dark, briny leather: sea water and raw leather up front, animalic ambergris, oud and driftwood underneath. Released in 2024, it is the work of David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi, the self-taught perfumer behind the Romanian house Toskovat. The brand pictures a ship that sailed years ago, and it wears like one: salt and wet wood, pomelo and saffron in the opening, then wool, costus, elemi and copal in a musky, resinous heart. Many wearers find the leather and smoke take over from the aquatic notes as it dries down, leaving a salty, dirty-leather base of oud, moss and palo santo.

Translation: woods lead, with genuine oud as the second pillar. The marine share is the sea water and aquatic notes, which read salty rather than fresh.
