Tom Ford Vanille Fatale EDP
Description
Vanille Fatale is vanilla with smoke in its hair: coffee, tobacco and suede wrapped around a dark Madagascar vanilla. Composed by Yann Vasnier of Givaudan for Tom Ford's Private Blend, it first appeared in 2017 and returned in 2024 in a new two-tone bottle. It opens warm and a little peppery on saffron and coriander, moves through roasted coffee and toasted barley softened by frangipani and narcissus, and settles into vanilla, tobacco, suede and mahogany. Reviewers often set it beside Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and describe it as the less literal of the two: less pipe tobacco, more coffee and flowers, with a smoky, slightly boozy vanilla that stays wearable.
Scent Character
- Sweet: 21%
- Leather: 21%
- Floral: 20%
- Woody: 19%
- Spicy: 19%
Translation: sweet vanilla and a suede-leather darkness share the lead almost equally, with the frangipani and narcissus heart, the woods and the saffron-coriander spice filling in behind them. That balance is why it reads as a smoky vanilla rather than a dessert.
Fragrance Pyramid
- Top: Saffron, Coriander
- Heart: Coffee, Frangipani, Barley, Narcissus
- Base: Madagascar Vanilla, Tobacco, Suede, Mahogany
Note: this is the pyramid Tom Ford lists for the 2024 edition. The 2017 original was published with a longer list that also named rum, myrrh, olibanum and plum. Reviewers describe the same core in both, with the florals a little more pronounced in the newer version.
Performance
Longevity: Around 6–8 hours on skin for most wearers, longer on fabric.
Sillage: Moderate: noticeable without filling a room.
Projection: A little past arm's length for the first couple of hours, then closer to the skin.
An honest note: some reviewers find it quite linear once the coffee settles, and others call it overpriced for that reason. If you already own Tobacco Vanille, a sample is the easiest way to judge whether the two feel different enough on you.
Best Occasions & Season
Best in Fall and Winter, with cool Spring evenings as a bonus, and made for Evening wear and a Night Out. It is unisex: the suede and tobacco lean masculine, the frangipani and vanilla lean feminine. Skip it in summer heat, when the vanilla and coffee can feel heavy.

FAQ
Does Vanille Fatale contain oud?
No. There is no agarwood in it. The darker side comes from suede, tobacco and mahogany, with roasted coffee adding to the smoky feel.
Is it men's or women's?
Unisex. It sits right in the middle, with suede and tobacco on one side and frangipani and vanilla on the other.
How does it compare to Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille?
Both are warm vanilla fragrances, but Tobacco Vanille is built around sweet pipe tobacco and dried fruit. Vanille Fatale puts coffee and flowers in the middle and uses suede for its darkness.
How long does it last?
Typically 6–8 hours on skin with moderate projection. It lasts longest on a scarf or sweater.
