Tom Ford Vanilla Sex EDP
Description
Vanilla Sex is a vanilla that opens on bitter almond, and that first ten minutes decides the whole thing for most people. Released in 2023 within Tom Ford's Private Blend line, originally launched simply as Vanilla, it leads with a sharp, marzipan-like bitter almond, softens through jasmine and orris, and settles into vanilla absolute, tonka bean, sandalwood and amber. The drydown is genuinely lovely: soft, warm and skin-close. Getting there means going through an opening that a good number of wearers actively dislike.
How It Differs From Tobacco Vanille
These are Tom Ford's two headline vanillas and they are cross-shopped constantly, so it is worth being direct. Tobacco Vanille is the heavy one, tobacco leaf, spice and dried fruit over vanilla, dense enough to feel like a winter coat, and one of the loudest things the house makes. Vanilla Sex goes the opposite way: no tobacco, no spice, just bitter almond over a soft vanilla-sandalwood base, and it sits far closer to the skin. If Tobacco Vanille has always been too much, this is the quieter answer; if you want presence, it is not.
Scent Character
- Sweet: 57%
- Floral: 29%
- Woody: 14%
Translation: overwhelmingly a sweet vanilla (vanilla absolute, tonka and the almond's marzipan quality account for well over half) with a substantial floral heart of jasmine and orris that most descriptions leave out, and sandalwood grounding the base.
Fragrance Pyramid
- Top: Bitter Almond
- Heart: Jasmine, Orris
- Base: Vanilla Absolute, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood, Amber
Performance
Longevity: Moderate, up to about 8 hours, skin-dependent.
Sillage: Modest. This stays near you.
Projection: Strong in the almond opening, then close.
An honest note: reception is genuinely split, and not only on the scent. The bitter almond dominates the first phase and reads as medicinal to some wearers. The softness that makes the drydown appealing also means it does not perform like a Private Blend price tag implies, and reviewers regularly say so. We would rather you know that before committing to a bottle at this level.
Best Occasions & Season
Built for Fall and Winter, and suited to Evening and Special Occasion wear. The soft vanilla base is cold-weather material, and the modest projection makes it comfortable in close quarters. This is a fragrance worn for the people who get near you rather than for a room.
Concentration & Provenance

Year: 2023
On the perfumer: Tom Ford does not disclose one for this release, so we have left it uncredited rather than guess.
Try Before You Commit
Of everything in this price bracket, this is among the strongest arguments for a decant. The bitter almond opening is divisive, the performance is moderate rather than commanding, and the bottle is expensive, three good reasons to find out on 1mL first. A 1mL decant is $13.99, 5mL is $60.99, and 10mL is $89.99, all hand-poured from genuine retail bottles.

FAQ
Why does it smell like marzipan at first?
That is the bitter almond, and it is the top note by design. It fades within the first hour into the vanilla-tonka base, but it is prominent while it lasts and it is the single most common complaint.
Is it the same as Tom Ford Vanilla?
Yes. It was released as Vanilla and is marketed as Vanilla Sex. Same fragrance, and reviews under either name describe this one.
Does it contain oud?
No. There is no agarwood in it. The warmth in the base is sandalwood, tonka and amber.
Is it worth the price?
That is genuinely contested. The drydown is beautiful and the materials are good, but the performance is moderate and there are cheaper vanillas in similar territory. Sample it before deciding.
