Stéphane Humbert Lucas makes bold, much-discussed Paris niche fragrances, and this set lets you try eight of them without buying a single full bottle. The perfumer composes his own 777 line himself, and his work runs from sunny tropical fruit to dark ink, resin and leather. Included are the mango and oud of God of Fire, the fruit cocktail of Mango Kiss, the cacao cream of Sand Dance and the darker serpent-themed pieces. Several of these are loved and argued about in equal measure, which is exactly why they are worth sampling first.

Eight 1mL Eau de Parfum samples:

• God of Fire: mango, ginger, lemon and pink pepper over jasmine and dry woods, resting on amber, nagarmotha, musk and oud.
• Mango Kiss: mango, wild chamomile and orange blossom, then ylang-ylang and coconut over iris butter, benzoin and Madagascar vanilla.
• Pink Boa: blackcurrant, bergamot and rosemary, then raspberry, basil and a vodka accord over amber, frankincense, patchouli and sandalwood.
• Venom Incarnat: wild strawberry, blackberry and caramel, then raspberry, cinnamon and cedar on Russian leather, vanilla, patchouli and tonka.
• Mortal Skin: an ink accord with blackberry and rockrose, opoponax, myrrh and iris in the heart, and a resinous base of labdanum, styrax, birch and musk.
• Sand Dance: Irish cream and mandarin melting into cacao and sandalwood, finished with benzoin, styrax and tonka.
• Lady White Snake: orange blossom, honeysuckle and mandarin, then magnolia, tuberose and jasmine over white leather, white musk and amber.
• Crying of Evil: red berries, spices, violet and tuberose, then leather, sandalwood and rose over olibanum, amber and patchouli.

How To Use a Discovery Set

Wear one fragrance per day on bare skin, one or two sprays on the wrist or neck, and leave it alone for a few hours. The opening is only the first chapter; the drydown is what you live with. Note which ones you keep sniffing, then compare your two favorites side by side before choosing a full bottle.

These are dense Eaux de Parfum. One spray is enough to judge each one, and it helps to try the fruity group (Mango Kiss, Pink Boa, God of Fire) apart from the dark, resinous group (Mortal Skin, Crying of Evil, Venom Incarnat).

Each 1mL sample comes in a 2mL vial filled halfway, so the vial will look half full. That is the right amount, and it gives you several wears of each fragrance.
