Zoologist Squid Extrait
Description
Somewhere below the light, a cloud of ink blooms silently into the dark and something ancient, boneless, and brilliant slips away. Zoologist's Squid is Celine Barel's ode to the ocean's most alien intelligence, an opening of incense and pink pepper that catches like sun on the surface, before the fragrance dives, releasing a briny, inky heart of sea salt and opoponax that reads less like a beach and more like the deep itself. It settles into a warm, resinous trail of ambergris, benzoin, and musk: less "marine" in the sporty, ozonic sense, and more like the ocean's memory of something that lived and vanished. Genuinely strange in the best way, and it won a Fragrance Foundation award for exactly that reason.
Scent Character
Fragrantica lists Squid as an Aromatic Aquatic fragrance whose dominant accords are Amber, Balsamic, and Aromatic, not a straightforward "sweet" or "fresh" profile, but a moody, resinous take on marine perfumery. Translation: this isn't a beachy citrus-and-salt scent; it's an inky, amber-dark interpretation of the sea, built around opoponax and ambergris rather than typical aquatic aldehydes.
Fragrance Pyramid
- Top: Pink Pepper, Solar Salicylate, Incense
- Heart: Black Ink Accord, Salty Accord, Opoponax
- Base: Ambergris, Benzoin, Musk
Note: "Black Ink Accord" and "Salty Accord" are Zoologist's own artistic compositions built to evoke squid ink and seawater, not literal ingredients, but deliberate interpretive notes true to the house's storytelling style.
Performance
As an Extrait de Parfum, expect long-lasting wear (4/5) with strong sillage (4/5) that opens brighter and settles into a warm, close, ambery skin-scent over several hours.
Best Occasions & Season
Genuinely year-round: the incense-forward opening works in cooler months while the salty, ambery heart keeps it wearable through summer. Suits evening and special-occasion wear especially well thanks to its resinous depth. Unisex.
