Description

Sartorial smells like a Savile Row tailor’s workshop: vanilla-scented pattern paper, beeswax thread and leather, warmed by honey and oakmoss.

Composed by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour and launched in 2010, Sartorial was built as an olfactory portrait of Norton & Sons, the storied Savile Row bespoke tailors who have dressed everyone from Winston Churchill to Fred Astaire. It opens on a sharp, aldehydic-metallic accord lifted by cardamom and black pepper, moves into a heart of lavender, beeswax and leather, and finishes on a honeyed, mossy, resinous base. It is a fougere built from a very specific memory, the smell of a tailor’s shop, rather than a generic “masculine” template.

Scent Character

  • Fresh: 25%
  • Sweet: 25%
  • Woody: 12%
  • Floral: 12%
  • Spicy: 12%
  • Resinous: 12%

Translation: a metallic-fresh, aldehydic opening balanced by honeyed sweetness, with a mossy, resinous base carrying beeswax and leather. There’s no agarwood here. The “oud-adjacent” depth actually comes from oakmoss, amber and patchouli.

Fragrance Pyramid

Top: Metallic Notes, Aldehydes, Cardamom, Black Pepper, Violet Leaf

Heart: Lavender, Beeswax, Leather, Lime, Cyclamen

Base: Oakmoss, Honey, Woodsy Notes, Tonka Bean, Amber, Patchouli

Performance

Longevity: Very good for an Eau de Toilette. Expect 6–8 hours on skin.

Sillage: Moderate, present without being overpowering, fitting for a scent inspired by a quiet, refined workshop.

Projection: A crisp, metallic announcement at first, softening within the hour into a warm, honeyed leather trail.

Best Occasions & Season

Versatile across Spring and Summer, and easy for Everyday and Leisure wear. The aldehydic freshness keeps the honey and leather from feeling heavy in warmer weather.

Gender: Marketed for men and rooted in a classic tailoring theme, though its fougere structure has broad appeal.

Concentration & Provenance

Concentration: Eau de Toilette

Perfumer: Bertrand Duchaufour

FAQ

What inspired Sartorial?
Penhaligon’s built the fragrance around the specific smells of a Savile Row bespoke tailor’s workshop (vanilla-scented pattern paper, beeswax-coated thread, leather and hot iron steam) using Norton & Sons as the reference point.

Does it contain real oud?
No. There’s no agarwood in the pyramid. The dark, resinous quality comes from oakmoss, amber and patchouli in the base.

Is it a classic fougere?
Yes. Lavender, oakmoss and tonka bean place it firmly in the fougere family, with an unusual aldehydic-honey twist.

What does a sample include?
An authentic decant in a labeled atomizer, drawn from a genuine retail bottle. Enough wears to judge how Sartorial performs on your skin before committing to a full bottle.
