Mont Blanc Explorer EDP
Description
Explorer is the fragrance that proved a designer house could take on Creed Aventus and sell a great deal doing it. Released in 2019 and composed by Jórdi Fernandez, Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux, it opens on bergamot, pink pepper and clary sage, moves through a heart of Haitian vetiver and leather, and finishes on ambroxan, akigalawood, Indonesian patchouli leaf and cacao pod. It is fresh and woody up front and distinctly smoky-dry underneath. The akigalawood and cacao are what give it the texture people remember.
How It Compares to Aventus: and to Explorer Extreme
It is worth being direct about this, because it is why most people arrive at Explorer. The comparison to Creed Aventus is real and intentional: the bright fruity-smoky opening over a dry, ambroxan-heavy base occupies the same territory, at a fraction of the price. It is not identical, Aventus leads on pineapple and birch, Explorer on bergamot and vetiver, and Aventus is the more refined of the two. But if Aventus is the reference you are shopping against, Explorer is the honest budget answer rather than a pretender. Explorer Extreme is the warmer, spicier flanker; Explorer Ultra Blue takes it aquatic.
Fragrance Pyramid
- Top: Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Clary Sage
- Heart: Haitian Vetiver, Leather
- Base: Ambroxan, Akigalawood, Indonesian Patchouli Leaf, Cacao Pod
Performance
Longevity: Strong, 8 hours or more is commonly reported.
Sillage: Good, without dominating a room.
Projection: Solid for the first several hours, then close and woody.
An honest note: Explorer's performance is genuinely one of its strengths and is a large part of why it sells. The ambroxan base is tenacious. The trade-off is that ambroxan is also the note some people cannot smell well on themselves, so a minority of wearers report it disappearing within an hour while everyone around them still notices it. If that happens to you, it is the material, not the bottle.
Best Occasions & Season
Wearable across Spring, Summer and Fall, and suited to Everyday and Work wear. The bergamot-and-vetiver structure handles warm weather better than most woody fragrances, while the leather and cacao give it enough substance for cooler air. Its balance is what makes it a default daily driver for a lot of people.

Try Before You Commit
If you are cross-shopping this against Aventus, a decant of each side by side is a far better use of money than buying either blind. The two are close enough that the choice comes down to which opening you prefer, and far enough apart that the wrong guess is an expensive one. A 1mL decant is $3.99, 5mL is $13.99, and 10mL is $16.99, all hand-poured from genuine retail bottles.

FAQ
Is Explorer a clone of Creed Aventus?
It is clearly inspired by it and occupies the same fresh-smoky-woody space, but it is not a copy. Aventus leads on pineapple and birch; Explorer leads on bergamot, vetiver and akigalawood, and reads drier.
How long does it last?
Eight hours or more is typical. The ambroxan base is the reason, and it holds particularly well on clothing.
Does it contain oud?
No. There is no agarwood in it. The dark, dry depth comes from akigalawood, leather and patchouli.
What is akigalawood?
A patchouli-derived material with a peppery, woody, slightly smoky character. It is a signature of this fragrance and a large part of why the drydown does not smell like a standard designer woody.
