Néroli Outrenoir takes its name from "outrenoir" — painter Pierre Soulages' term for black that reflects light — and builds a fragrance around the same contradiction: a bright citrus-neroli top that darkens into smoke and earth. Created by Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk for Guerlain's boutique L'Art & la Matière collection and released in 2016, it's built to feel like light passing through darkness rather than a straightforward neroli cologne. Petitgrain, bergamot, tangerine, lemon, and grapefruit open crisp and citrusy; tea, neroli, orange blossom, smoke, and earthy notes carry the heart into shadow; oakmoss, vanilla, myrrh, benzoin, and ambrette settle it into a soft, mossy, faintly smoky base.
