Description

Bvlgari Tygar is the Le Gemme collection's grapefruit-and-ambroxan powerhouse, a blast of bitter citrus that dries down into warm, mineral amber and earthy vetiver.

Composed by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud for Bvlgari and released in 2016, Tygar takes its name from the Indian tiger's-eye stone, a gem long associated with courage and quiet power. The composition plays out as a duel: a sharp, juicy grapefruit opening against a deep ambroxan-musk base, with ginger and ambrette seed bridging the two. Reviewers routinely call it one of the most underrated luxury citrus fragrances: expensive-smelling, radiant, and far longer-lasting than a citrus scent has any right to be.

How It Differs From Bvlgari Tygar Extrait

  • Tygar EDP (2016): the original. Brighter and more citrus-forward, with the grapefruit staying legible for longer before the amber takes over. The everyday, warm-weather choice.
  • Tygar Extrait (2025): the higher-concentration reinterpretation. Denser and richer, with the amber-woody base pushed further forward and the citrus reading more as a top-note flash.
  • Which to pick: reach for the EDP if you want the grapefruit; reach for the Extrait if you want the amber.

Scent Character

  • Woody: 31% (vetiver and patchouli, the earthy spine)
  • Amber-Mineral: 21% (ambroxan; dry, salty-warm, skin-like)
  • Musky-Floral: 20% (ambrette seed's soft, powdery musk)
  • Fresh: 19% (bitter grapefruit)
  • Sweet: 9% (a faint warmth, not a gourmand sweetness)

Translation: a bitter-citrus opening over a dry, mineral amber and earthy woods, fresh at first spray, warm and skin-close by the second hour. There is no agarwood in this fragrance; the depth comes from ambroxan and vetiver, not oud.

Fragrance Pyramid

Top: Grapefruit

Heart: Ginger, Ambrette

Base: Ambroxan, Musk, Vetiver, Patchouli

Performance

  • Longevity: Strong. Most wearers report 7–9 hours on skin, with reports of 10+ hours on clothing. Unusually persistent for a citrus-led composition, thanks to the ambroxan base.
  • Sillage: Moderate-to-strong, a clear, radiant trail in the opening hours.
  • Projection: 2–3 feet for the first hour or two, then settling to an arm's-length warmth.

Best Occasions & Season

  • Spring & Summer: the bitter grapefruit is built for warm weather, though the amber base keeps it wearable into fall
  • Business, Everyday & Leisure: clean and polished enough for the office, distinctive enough to be a signature
  • Marketed for men; the citrus-amber profile is straightforward enough that it wears easily on anyone

FAQ

What does Bvlgari Tygar smell like?
A bright, bitter grapefruit opening that warms into dry ambroxan amber, soft ambrette musk and earthy vetiver-patchouli. Fresh and citrusy at the start, warm and skin-like by the drydown.

Does Tygar contain oud?
No. Despite the deep, resinous warmth of the drydown, there is no agarwood in the composition. The depth comes from ambroxan, musk and vetiver.

How long does it last?
Strong for a citrus fragrance: typically 7–9 hours on skin, and noticeably longer on fabric.

Is it men's or unisex?
It is marketed as a men's fragrance, but the grapefruit-amber structure is clean and unfussy enough to wear well on anyone.

How does it compare to the Tygar Extrait?
The Extrait (2025) is denser and more amber-dominant; this original EDP keeps the grapefruit brighter and more prominent for longer.
