Description

Valero is Parfums de Marly's take on the modern blue fragrance, rebuilt at extrait strength. Part of Les Extraits, the house's concentrated 2025 collection, it opens bright and citric (bergamot, cedrat and juniper) then moves through a genuinely aromatic heart of Bourbon geranium, lavender, cypress and nutmeg before settling into patchouli, sandalwood and a large dose of Ambrox. That last material is the point of the fragrance: Ambrox reads as warm, mineral and almost skin-like, and it is what turns a familiar fresh-woody structure into something that wears close and sensual rather than sharp. Reviewers are candid that Valero is the most conventional of the Les Extraits line. This is a very well-made blue fragrance, not a boundary-pushing one, and it is worth knowing that before you buy.

How It Differs From Percival and Greenley

  • Percival: the fresh-salty aromatic of the house, brighter and more marine, but a known soft performer at eau de parfum strength.
  • Greenley: green apple and citrus, the most casual and Sauvage-adjacent of the three.
  • Valero: the warmest and the most concentrated. The lavender-geranium heart gives it classical fougere bones that the other two lack, and the Ambrox base makes it the closest-wearing and longest-lasting.
  • Which to choose: Valero if you want the house's fresh-aromatic idea at extrait depth and are happy with a familiar genre executed cleanly. If you want something the room has not smelled before, look elsewhere in the line.

Scent Character

  • Woody: 41% (sandalwood, cypress, patchouli)
  • Aromatic-Floral: 20% (Bourbon geranium, lavender)
  • Fresh: 19% (bergamot, cedrat, juniper)
  • Amber-Mineral: 10% (Ambrox)
  • Spicy: 10% (nutmeg)

Translation: a woody fougere, citrus up top, a true lavender-and-geranium aromatic heart, and a warm mineral-woody base. The geranium and lavender register as "floral" on a measurement but never smell like flowers; they are what make this a fougere rather than a plain fresh-woody.

Fragrance Pyramid

Top: Bergamot, Cedrat, Juniper

Heart: Geranium Bourbon, Lavender, Cypress, Nutmeg

Base: Patchouli Cœur, Sandalwood, Ambrox

Performance

  • Longevity: a realistic 7–9 hours, with the extrait concentration doing real work. Reports genuinely diverge here. Some wearers get well past ten hours with strong early projection, others find it disappointing for the concentration and the price. Ambrox-heavy bases are a common cause of that split.
  • Sillage: moderate. Strongest in the first two hours, then it draws in close.
  • Projection: around two feet early, then an arm's length or less.
  • Worth knowing: Ambrox is a material many people go partially nose-blind to. If Valero seems to vanish on you while others still comment on it, that is what is happening, resist the urge to over-apply.

Best Occasions & Season

  • Season: Spring, Summer and early Fall. The citrus-and-lavender structure is built for mild and warm weather rather than deep cold.
  • Occasions: Everyday wear, the office, and daytime leisure. Clean and inoffensive enough to wear anywhere, which is both its strength and the basis of the criticism.
  • Gender: Unisex, catalogued and composed. The lavender-fougere structure leans traditionally masculine but nothing in it excludes any wearer.
  • Skip for: cold winter evenings, or any occasion where you want a distinctive, memorable signature rather than a polished one.

FAQ

Is Valero a men's or women's fragrance?
Unisex. Parfums de Marly catalogues Les Extraits without gendering them, though the lavender-geranium fougere structure is traditionally read as masculine.

How long does it last?
Around 7–9 hours for most wearers, with moderate sillage. Reports vary more than usual. Some people get ten hours or more, others noticeably less. The Ambrox in the base is the likely reason, since sensitivity to it differs widely from person to person.

Does it contain oud?
No. There is no agarwood anywhere in Valero. The depth and warmth in the base come from Ambrox, patchouli and sandalwood.

Is the extrait worth it over a standard eau de parfum?
It buys concentration and closeness rather than a different fragrance. Valero wears richer and lasts longer than a comparable eau de parfum would, but reviewers widely consider it the most familiar composition in the Les Extraits collection. Judge it as a well-executed blue fragrance at high concentration, and it delivers; expect a statement piece and it may not.
