Montale Chocolate Greedy EDP
Description
Chocolate Greedy is the fragrance most people mean when they say they want to smell like chocolate, and nearly twenty years on, it is still the benchmark. Created in 2007 by Pierre Montale, it opens on bitter orange and dried fruits, moves into a rich cacao and mocha-bean heart, and dries down on Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean. What keeps it from being a novelty is the bitterness: the orange and the roasted coffee cut through the cocoa so it reads as dark chocolate rather than a candy bar. Reviewers who love it describe the drydown as a warm, powdery skin scent, closer to cocoa dusted over truffles than to dessert.
Scent Character
- Sweet: 75%
- Fresh: 25%
Translation: overwhelmingly a sweet gourmand (cacao, vanilla and tonka doing nearly all the work) with the remaining quarter coming from the bitter orange and dried fruit up top, which is the only thing standing between this and pure dessert.
Fragrance Pyramid
- Top: Bitter Orange, Dried Fruits
- Heart: Cacao Cream, Mocha Bean, Coffee
- Base: Madagascar Vanilla, Tonka Bean
Performance
Longevity: Excellent, commonly 8 hours or more on skin, and famously persistent on clothing.
Sillage: Strong in the first hours, settling into a warm, close aura.
Projection: Considerable early on; this announces itself in a room.
An honest note: Montale's reputation for potency is deserved here, and the usual warning runs the other way from most fragrances. The risk is over-application, not disappointment. Wearers routinely report the scent surviving a wash cycle on fabric. One or two sprays is genuinely enough.
Best Occasions & Season
Built for Fall and Winter, and suited to Evening, Leisure and Night Out wear. Cold air flatters gourmands, and this one has the weight to carry through it. In summer heat the cocoa and vanilla can turn cloying, and its projection makes it a difficult choice for a shared office.

Try Before You Commit
Chocolate gourmands are the most polarizing category in perfumery, and opinion on this one splits cleanly: brilliant and comforting, or far too sweet. Given the longevity, a bad full bottle purchase is one you live with for a long time. A 1mL decant is $3.99, 5mL is $14.99, and 10mL is $22.99, all hand-poured from genuine retail bottles.

FAQ
Does it smell like actual chocolate?
Yes, and more literally than most gourmands attempt. The cacao note is front and centre; the bitter orange and coffee keep it on the dark-chocolate side rather than milk chocolate.
Is it unisex?
Yes. Montale lists it for women and men, and it is worn widely across the board, gourmands of this style are not gendered in practice.
How does it compare to Montale's coffee fragrances?
The Intense Café family leads with roasted coffee and rose, with chocolate in a supporting role. Chocolate Greedy inverts that. Cacao is the subject and the coffee is there to add bitterness and depth.
Will it last?
Almost certainly longer than you expect. Eight hours on skin is typical and it can survive on clothing for a day or more, so apply conservatively.
