Description

Crystal Saffron is Aurélien Guichard's saffron for Matière Première, released in 2022, and it is deliberately the opposite of what saffron usually does in perfumery.

Guichard worked with natural Greek saffron from the Kozani region, the first time he had used the material, and pushed it toward its fresh and crisp texture rather than its warm and spicy one. The result is cool and urban rather than opulent. Habanolide musk gives it a contemporary transparency, ambroxan supplies the addictive comfort common to everything the house makes, and Somalian frankincense arrives in the drydown, which reviewers repeatedly single out as the best part, precisely because it is unexpected after the saffron.

Scent Character

• Woody: 50% (ambroxan, habanolide musk)
• Smoky & Resinous: 25% (Somalian frankincense)
• Spicy: 25% (Greek saffron)

Translation: cool, crisp saffron over a clean musky-ambery base, turning resinous and smoky as it dries. Minimal by design, four materials doing a great deal of work.

Longevity: Strong. Reviewers describe it as a powerhouse that lasts the day. The ambroxan base is unusually tenacious.

Is it a warm, spicy saffron?
Deliberately not. Guichard built it around saffron's crisp, cool facet instead, closer to clean and urban than to a rich amber.

Does it contain oud?
No. The smoky depth is Somalian frankincense. There is no agarwood in this composition.
