Composed by perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur for the Parisian house Kilian and launched in 2017 under the subtitle “Memento Mori,” Black Phantom opens on intoxicating rum and drives straight into a bittersweet heart of dark chocolate, coffee and almond, before settling onto caramel, sugar cane, vanilla and tonka over sandalwood and vetiver. Reviewers divide sharply on it (fans love the boozy coffee-caramel richness, critics find it too sweet) but both camps agree it is one of the most distinctive gourmands in niche perfumery.
