Eight Kayali fragrances in one set, covering the vanillas, the Yum gourmands and the fruity Eden side of the house. Kayali was founded by Mona Kattan, and almost everything it makes is about pleasure: sugar, vanilla, fruit and cream, with a number on every bottle that counts the rounds of reformulation it took to finish. The trouble is that on paper many of them sound alike. Worn side by side, the differences are clear, from the amber warmth of Vanilla | 28 to the pistachio ice cream of Yum Pistachio Gelato | 33. • Eden Sparkling Lychee | 39: lychee, blackcurrant and red apple over violet and rose, on sugar, vanilla and musk. Bright and fizzy.
• Vanilla | 28: vanilla orchid and brown sugar over tonka, amber and musk. The warm, cozy vanilla the house is known for.
• Yum Boujee Marshmallow | 81: apple and lemon, then pink marshmallow, strawberry and coconut over whipped vanilla and raspberry sugar. Soft and creamy.
• Vanilla Candy Rock Sugar | 42: pear, marshmallow and rum over bubble gum, caramel and jasmine, on sugar, tonka and sandalwood. Playful candy sweetness.
• Yum Pistachio Gelato | 33: pistachio, hazelnut and rum over pear, peach and jasmine, with whipped cream, marshmallow and cacao underneath. Nutty and dessert-like.
• Eden Juicy Apple | 01: red apple, litchi and blackcurrant over berries, rose and jasmine, on sugar, musk and vanilla. The fruit-forward one.
• Lovefest Burning Cherry | 48: black cherry, raspberry and bergamot over praline, heliotrope and rose, settling on palo santo, guaiac wood and Peru balsam. Sweet with a smoky edge.
• Vanilla Royale Sugared Patchouli | 64: vanilla orchid, jasmine and golden rum over crème brûlée, spiced rose and leather, with patchouli giving the sugar depth. The darkest and richest of the eight.

How To Use a Discovery Set

Each 1mL sample comes in a 2mL vial filled halfway, so the vial will look half full. That is the correct amount. Every vial is labeled with the fragrance name.

Wear one fragrance a day, on skin rather than a paper strip, and give it the whole day. The first ten minutes are the loudest and least representative part of any fragrance; judge it at hour three. Once you have a shortlist of two, wear them on opposite wrists and compare. Gourmands shift a lot with skin chemistry, so a scent that smells similar to another in the vial can wear very differently on you.

Kayali says each number is the count of formulation rounds it took to get the fragrance right. It is not a note count or a strength rating.

Which Kayali is the least sweet?
Lovefest Burning Cherry and Vanilla Royale Sugared Patchouli have the most depth, from palo santo and woods in one and patchouli and leather in the other. Eden Sparkling Lychee is the brightest.

Are Kayali fragrances unisex?
They are sold mostly to women, but nothing about vanilla, fruit or cream is gendered. Wear whatever you enjoy.
