Five 1mL samples:

• Aventus: launched in 2010. Pineapple, blackcurrant, bergamot and apple over a birch heart, settling on musk, oakmoss and ambergris. Fruity at first, then smoky and woody.
• Millésime Impérial: from 1995. Sea salt and fruity notes, then lemon, bergamot, mandarin and iris over musk and woods. Bright and salty citrus with a soft, powdery edge.
• Green Irish Tweed: from 1985. Lemon verbena and iris, a violet leaf heart, and sandalwood with ambergris in the base. A green, grassy fougère, clean and classic.
• Virgin Island Water: from 2007. Coconut, lime, bergamot and mandarin, then ginger, hibiscus and jasmine over white rum, cane sugar and musk. Tropical and sweet, the holiday scent of the set.
• Silver Mountain Water: from 1995. Bergamot and mandarin, a heart of green tea and blackcurrant, then musk and sandalwood. Cool, sharp and almost metallic, the most austere of the five.

How To Use a Discovery Set

Each 1mL sample comes in a 2mL vial filled halfway, so the vial will look half full. That is the correct amount, and it gives you roughly 15 sprays. Every vial is labeled with the fragrance name.

Wear one fragrance a day, on skin rather than a paper strip, and give it the whole day. The first ten minutes are the loudest and least representative part of any fragrance; judge it at hour three. Once you have a shortlist of two, wear them on opposite wrists and compare. Aventus and Millésime Impérial both open with fruit, so give them separate days rather than testing them back to back.
