Three releases from Amouage's Essences line plus the eau de parfum Outlands, four rich, resinous fragrances to wear side by side before choosing a bottle. Amouage describes the Essences as concentrates infused for six months with aged sandalwood chips, with the alcohol matured separately in oak barrels. Remain, Line 618 and Sequence each take that base somewhere different: incense and white flowers, pineapple and leather, red fruit and oud. Outlands, a spiced incense-amber, rounds out this Amouage sample set. It makes a considered gift for someone who already knows Amouage and wants to try the house's newer work.

Four 1mL samples:

• Remain (Extrait): hojari frankincense, mandarin and pimento berry, a heart of Madonna lily, jasmine and ylang-ylang, and a base of ambergris, guaiacwood and patchouli. Bright incense over creamy white flowers.
• Line 618 (Extrait): frankincense, black pepper, pineapple and plum, then pine, heliotrope and coconut milk over sandalwood, patchouli and leather. Sweet, fruity and woody, with a smooth leather finish.
• Sequence (Extrait): lychee, raspberry and saffron, a heart of rose, osmanthus and tonka bean, and a base of leather, oud and amberwood. Fruity on top, darker and leathery underneath.
• Outlands (EDP): frankincense, cardamom, elemi and Sichuan pepper, then rose, saffron, patchouli and orange blossom over benzoin, labdanum, amber and vanilla. Warm, spiced incense and amber.

How To Use a Discovery Set

Each 1mL sample comes in a 2mL vial filled halfway, so the vial will look half full. That is the correct amount, and it gives you roughly 15 sprays. Every vial is labeled with the fragrance name.

Wear one fragrance a day, on skin rather than a paper strip, and give it the whole day. The first ten minutes are the loudest and least representative part of any fragrance; judge it at hour three. Once you have a shortlist of two, wear them on opposite wrists and compare. Three of these are concentrated, so one spray is enough to start; Line 618 and Sequence both open fruity, and the differences show once the leather comes through.
